WRITING RETREAT

Astream

May 19-23, 2025

I love rowing boats, and I love teaching — I’ve been doing both for twenty-five years—and have always dreamed of leading a workshop while drifting down the river. As it happens, a friend of mine recently built a gorgeous seven-person wooden dory, and offered to let me employ it as a floating classroom.

We’re going to depart Missoula each morning, to spend full days on the Blackfoot, Clark Fork, and Bitterroot Rivers workshopping, reading, and engaging in generative exercises—not to mention birdwatching, eating good food, marveling at the scenery, maybe picking a few morels—returning to Missoula before dinner each evening.

Participants will procure their own lodgings, breakfasts, and dinners in Missoula—though I’ll cook a final celebratory meal—while lunches, charcuterie, and drinks will be provided, and served on the boat.

The workshop is capped at six students, which the dory can seat comfortably around a central table. I’ll row, and curate the conversation from a seat in the stern. The schedule will allow each student to workshop a 12- to 20-page piece, to be provided two weeks prior to the session.

Along with daily craft talks and engagement with inspiring published texts, we’ll cover book proposals, submission protocols, finding an agent, and more.

Is the workshop you’ve been waiting for? Get more info or sign up here.
